Micron expands U.S. investment to $200 billion amid Trump push to onshore semiconductor supply chains

Micron Technology is increasing its domestic investment to $200 billion, including $150 billion for manufacturing, building a new chip fab in Idaho and expanding one in Virginia and $50 billion for R&D.
The expansion includes advanced memory packaging and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) production to strengthen the U.S. AI ecosystem and reduce reliance on overseas technology.
Micron's investment is expected to create around 90,000 direct and indirect jobs, reinforcing U.S. technological capacity and supporting economic revitalization.
The Micron deal adds to a wave of domestic investment under President Donald Trump, including a $1.4 trillion UAE framework focused on AI, semiconductors and energy, with major projects in LNG, data centers and critical minerals.
Apple pledged $500 billion to expand U.S. AI infrastructure and job creation, while IBM, NVIDIA, TSMC and others have announced trillions in combined U.S. investments, reshaping the American tech and manufacturing landscape.

Micron Technology has announced that it is expanding its U.S. investment footprint to approximately $200 billion, adding $30 billion to previously stated plans as President Donald Trump brings semiconductor manufacturing back to U.S. soil to bolster domestic chip production. The bulk of the new investment, $150 billion, will be directed toward manufacturing operations, including the construction of a second advanced memory fabrication plant in Boise, Idaho, and an expansion of existing facilities in Manassas, Virginia. An additional $50 billion will be allocated to research and development initiatives. "These investments are designed to allow Micron to meet expected market demand, maintain share and support Micron's goal of producing 40 percent of its DRAM in the U.S," the company said on June 12, referring to a type of widely employed memory chip. A key part of Micron's expansion involves ramping up advanced packaging capabilities – specifically High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a stacked DRAM technology crucial for the performance of AI systems. The company said this will help strengthen the domestic AI supply chain and reduce dependence on overseas technology. "Micron's investment in advanced memory manufacturing and HBM capabilities in the U.S., with support from the Trump administration, is an important step forward for the AI ecosystem," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said. The investment is expected to create around 90,000 direct and indirect jobs, bolstering local economies and reinforcing the U.S. technology labor force. "It's all part of President Trump's commitment to revitalizing American manufacturing and establishing the country as the global leader in technology – particularly in artificial intelligence," the White House said. "It's another big win for American workers, national security and leadership in the world – and the best is yet to come."

Trump administration secures investment from other major technology companies

The Micron investment adds to a wave of commitments the Trump Administration has secured from major technology companies. In March, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) agreed to a $1.4 trillion U.S. investment framework focused on joint development of artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and energy technologies, further amplifying America's global technology footprint. Among the major initiatives announced is a $25 billion joint venture between ADQ (Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company) and Energy Capital Partners to expand U.S. energy infrastructure and data centers. Additionally, XRG, an energy investment firm owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC), has committed to supporting U.S. natural gas production and exports, including a significant investment in the NextDecade LNG export facility in Texas. The framework also includes a $1.2 billion mining partnership between ADQ and Orion Resource Partners to extract and process critical minerals vital for clean energy technologies and semiconductor manufacturing. A new aluminum smelter is planned for construction in the U.S. to strengthen domestic industrial supply chains. Lastly, an AI Infrastructure Partnership will seek to mobilize $100 billion to build next-generation data centers across the country. In February, Apple pledged a $500 billion investment plan across the United States over the next five years, including the creation of 20,000 new jobs and the construction of next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) servers. These domestic initiatives include plans to build a major server manufacturing facility in Houston by 2026 and launch a new manufacturing academy in Detroit, aimed at training workers for advanced technology roles. Apple also announced significant investments to expand operations at its existing U.S. data centers in Arizona, California, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington. Meanwhile, IBM, NVIDIA, TSMC and others have committed trillions more in combined investments over the past year. AI chip leader and Micron customer Nvidia said in April that it would invest as much as $500 billion in U.S.-based AI server infrastructure over the next four years, in collaboration with partners including Taiwan's TSMC.
