The same Democratic lawmakers who spent years pushing electric vehicles (EVs) as the planet’s salvation are now either silent or openly hostile toward Tesla, revealing their environmentalism was never about the Earth—just politics. Since January 2025, Tesla dealerships, charging stations, and individual vehicles have been targeted in at least nine states, with arson, gunfire, and vandalism reported by the FBI. These attacks, cheered by fringe activists, spew dangerous pollutants—including heavy metals and hydrogen cyanide—into the air, endangering first responders and nearby communities. Yet the very politicians who once championed EV tax credits and mandates now turn a blind eye, proving their climate activism is little more than a partisan weapon.

The left’s hypocritical war on Tesla

Democrats have long positioned themselves as the guardians of the environment, pushing aggressive EV policies under former President Joe Biden. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) doled out $7,000 tax credits for Tesla buyers, while Biden’s EPA imposed strict emissions rules to force automakers into electrification. But now that Musk—once a liberal darling—has aligned with Trump, the left’s rhetoric has shifted overnight. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who once boasted of cosponsoring the Green New Deal, sneered at Trump’s Tesla purchase, tweeting: “Grocery prices are soaring. Housing costs are skyrocketing. Retirement savings are plummeting. But Donald Trump thought today would be a good day to play car salesman.” Yet Warren’s own state has benefited from millions in federal EV charging subsidies—funding she praised just two years ago. Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) similarly blasted Trump for showcasing a Tesla at the White House, calling it “peak corruption.” Never mind that Clark voted for the IRA’s EV incentives—or that Massachusetts received $22.9 million for charging stations under Biden’s infrastructure law. The message is clear: Environmentalism matters only when it serves Democratic power.

EV fires: A toxic disaster liberals ignore

While Democrats feign outrage over Trump’s Tesla, they ignore the real environmental catastrophe unfolding in their own backyard: EV fires. Steve Milloy, a senior fellow at the Energy and Environment Legal Institute, warns that burning Teslas emit “more than 100 substances, including heavy metals, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen cyanide—all of which can cause illness and death at high enough exposures.” Unlike gasoline fires, which burn relatively cleanly, lithium-ion battery blazes release persistent toxins into the air and soil. First responders risk inhaling lethal fumes, while runoff from firefighting efforts can contaminate water supplies. Yet the same activists who scream about plastic straws and littering have no qualms about torching 4,000-pound battery packs in public.

An unhinged movement

The attacks aren’t just reckless—they’re unhinged. In Colorado, a woman hurled Molotov cocktails at a Cybertruck, spray-painting “nazi cars” on the dealership. In Seattle, four Cybertrucks were incinerated. In Oregon, gunmen fired at least seven rounds into a Tesla showroom. Online, the #TeslaTakedown movement urges followers to dump their cars and stocks, while a now-deleted doxxing site published Tesla owners’ personal details. Trump has rightly labeled this violence “domestic terrorism,” vowing to prosecute perpetrators. But where’s the Democratic outrage? Instead, they’ve spent weeks mocking Trump’s Tesla purchase—proving their climate crusade was always a charade. The left’s sudden disdain for Tesla exposes the emptiness of their environmentalism. If they truly cared about the planet, they’d condemn these attacks—not just for endangering lives, but for polluting the air with toxins far worse than anything emitted by gas cars. Instead, they’ve abandoned their own green agenda purely to spite Trump and Musk. As Tesla burns, so does the left’s credibility. If Democrats were honest, they’d admit their environmentalism was never about saving the Earth—just controlling it.
