In his inauguration speech on Jan. 20, Trump reiterated his belief that the U.S. should reclaim the canal. "American ships are being severely overcharged ... and above all, China is operating the Panama Canal. We didn't give it to China. We gave it to Panama, and we're taking it back," Trump declared.
