Pro-life supporters are set to gather at more than 320 locations across Canada to conduct a peaceful demonstration against abortion on Oct. 6. The annual Life Chain event, which began in 1987 in Yuba City, California, will be led by a small pro-life group Please Let Me Live from 2 to 3 p.m. in most areas. Life Chain, which became a national event in the United States since Campaign Life Coalition brought it in 1990, seeks to peacefully raise awareness and stand against all stages of abortion. Prominent Canadian religious leaders are joining the event, including Angelina Steenstra, National Coordinator for Canada of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign; Tanya Gaw, founder of Action4Canada; Judith Obelnycki, president of the Lutherans For Life in Canada; Jill Mowser, president of the Latter-day Saints for Life in Canada; Jessica Spackman, president and founder of the global Latter-day Saints for Life organization; Bruce Poulin, Ontario state deputy for the Knights of Columbus; and His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios Athanassoulas of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada, which also endorsed the event. Many prominent Catholic archbishops have also endorsed the event, including Richard William Smith of the Archdiocese of Edmonton in Alberta; Gerard Pettipas of the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan in Alberta; Donald Bolen of the Archdiocese of Regina in Saskatchewan; Albert LeGatt of the Archdiocese of St. Boniface in Manitoba; Michael Mulhall of the Archdiocese of Kingston in Eastern Ontario; and Brian Dunn of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth in central Nova Scotia. Additionally, Bishop Bryan Bayda of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church's Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada; Bishop Hector Vila of the Diocese of Whitehorse in Yukon and northern British Columbia; Bishop Gary Gordon of the Diocese of Victoria in Canada; Bishop Stephen Jensen of the Diocese of Prince George in northern British Columbia and at least 12 other Catholic leaders in Canada have endorsed the event. "It is our responsibility as people of faith to bear witness to the sanctity of human life, and to support those that have been affected by abortion," Bolen said in his endorsement. Jensen echoed this statement in his endorsement: "As the culture of death around us spreads inexorably, it is more important than ever that those ‘with eyes to see’ offer a reminder to the wider society that life is a gift to cherish and defend at every stage."

LIFE Runners also organize a peaceful rally against abortion in America

In the United States, pro-life group LIFE Runners have organized a similar anti-abortion demonstration, known as the A-Cross America Relay, a nationwide run event meant to encourage pregnant mothers to choose life for their unborn babies. Last month, runners and walkers from the East and West Coast, North Dakota and Texas started the event and are set to converge in Kansas City at Roe Park on Oct. 19. At the same time, other pro-lifers are also participating in their neighborhoods, wearing LIFE Runners t-shirts urging onlookers to "REMEMBER the Unborn." The event started with prayer sessions at Planned Parenthood locations in San Francisco and New York, followed by walks to prominent public spaces like Union Square and Father Duffy statue in Times Square. Participants would also walk through universities in the northern and southern U.S. to a Planned Parenthood in Minnesota to target college-age students, a demographic accounting for 40 percent of abortions. Just like the Life Chain event, the A-Cross America Relay is a peaceful rally that combines prayer and advocacy, while reciting the LIFE Runners Creed in front of abortion clinics. The relay is set to conclude on Oct. 19 with a prayer to be led by Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City at Roe Park.
