Germany's health authorities aligned COVID-19 mandates with political directives, internal documents reveal

A fresh set of released internal documents from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's federal disease control and prevention agency, indicated that during the peak of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, German health officials caved to political pressure when it came to mandates and policies. Stefan Homburg, a public finance expert and retired professor from Leibniz University of Hannover, brought "seven shocking RKI files" to the attention of the English-speaking world in a video published June 19. He said that the Jan. 2020 to April 2021 documents exposed how Germany aligned COVID-19 recommendations with political directives rather than available evidence. The documents found back in March were initially kept confidential and some portions were even heavily redacted. The papers came out following legal action by journalist Paul Schreyer, author of the documentary, "Pandemic simulation games: Preparation for a new era?" The Defender reported that RKI subsequently made over 2,500 mostly unredacted pages publicly available on May 30, citing "public interest in the content of the COVID-19 crisis team protocols." According to the RKI's introduction to the released files, the minutes "reflect the open scientific discourse in which different perspectives are addressed and weighed up." Homburg accused experts, who knew what was going on but stated the opposite. In the said video, he discussed how the RKI documents expose several discrepancies between internal expert discussions and public health messaging. Contrary to public messaging, internal discussions suggested COVID-19 might be less severe than typical influenza. "More people die in a normal influenza wave," one entry reads. "The main risk of dying of COVID-19 is age – 83 years, to be precise, in Germany," Homburg said. Homburg also pointed out the lack of evidence supporting widespread mask use. "There is no evidence for the use of FFP2 [also known as N95, KN95 or P2] masks outside of occupational health and safety," one entry notes, adding that the information "could also be made available to the public." He said that the public was fooled and forced for years to wear FFP2 masks. He also lambasted school closures in heavily affected areas during the peak of the pandemic era. "School closures in areas that are not particularly affected are not recommended," the documents state. But he observed, "In the same week, politicians decided to close all German schools for months." As early as January 2021, RKI experts questioned the propaganda around herd immunity. "Pfizer's preceding clinical trial had not demonstrated protection against serious illness and they had not even tested protection against transmission," Homburg argued. "The experts knew this but stated the opposite in public and even before our courts." One file also revealed concerns about serious side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine. "Sinus thrombosis is a side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine," the document stated. "There is also a 20-fold increased incidence in men." "The experts did not inform the population about this danger but insisted that AstraZeneca was safe and effective," he added. Meanwhile, former Pfizer Vice President Michael Yeadon called the political interference with RKI's scientific analysis and recommendations "appalling" and RKI's continuing compliance "cowardly." "I don't think there's an equivalent document which admits repeatedly that this event was wholly POLITICAL and decisions entirely driven by non-technically qualified political people at the top of government," he said. German servicemen are no longer required to take COVID-19 vaccines

A few years after the mandatory vaccine mandate, members of Germany's Bundeswehr (armed forces) are no longer required to submit to the protocol. The military was required to be vaccinated against diseases such as measles, mumps and the flu. The COVID-19 vaccine was added to the list in November 2021. But the requirement was dropped following recommendations from the Bundeswehr's chief medical officer and a military medical advisory committee, ministry spokesperson Mitko Muller said. It was replaced by a strong recommendation to get the vaccine. News of the decision came as Germany's Federal Administrative Court considered a complaint by a noncommissioned officer in the navy against the continued vaccination requirement. Germany contemplated a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all adults in the country in late 2021 and early 2022, but some government lawmakers and most of the opposition were against the idea. In April 2022, lawmakers rejected a narrower bill that would have required all people 60 and over to be vaccinated.
