A mysterious fire has gutted part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's mountain palace in Siberia, rumored to house a sprawling nuclear bunker for his family. The inferno ravaged a building at the Altai Mountain retreat. Images showed flames engulfing the building at the palace estate, which is officially owned by Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom, but is widely believed to be one of Putin's many luxurious residences across Russia. The extent of damage to the complex's main residence remains unclear. However, images that have leaked onto the internet and to local and independent media outlets note that at least one of the buildings in the massive luxury complex was partially levelled by the blaze. The cause of the fire is also unknown, but it follows months of "sabotage fires" at key Russian facilities. The fire was first reported by blogger Amyr Aitashev and activist Aruna Arna, with officials refusing to comment on the incident, according to independent news sources. Opposition investigators are convinced that the vast estate in the Altai Republic, set amidst stunning mountain scenery, is linked to Putin. Russians are prohibited from approaching the elite hideaway, as security deems it a "specially protected facility intended for the recreation of senior officials of the state." (Related: Putin is setting up private armies for protection against Wagner-style rebellion.) The palace is located in the Ongudaysky district of the Altai Republic, a region in Siberia bordering Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan. The blaze occurred just hours after Ukraine received permission to strike inside Russian territories using American weapons. This significant shift comes as Russia continues its assault on Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, in an effort to seize more Ukrainian territory. Ukraine has been persistently calling for additional support from the West, with U.S. President Joe Biden finally responding with a partial change to U.S. policy. This decision, likely to infuriate an already paranoid Putin, allows U.S. weapons to be used by Ukraine for "counter-fire purposes" against their aggressors. The timing of the fire at Putin's Altai Mountain palace amid these geopolitical tensions adds a layer of intrigue and speculation. With the cause of the blaze still unknown, it remains to be seen whether this incident is another act of sabotage or an unfortunate accident. As Russia's war against Ukraine continues, such incidents highlight the vulnerabilities and uncertainties faced by both sides in this ongoing conflict.

Altai Mountain mansion serves as secluded hideout for Putin's family

When the Russian special military operation in Ukraine began two years ago, reports indicated that he sent his two daughters, Maria and Katerina, to the mansion along with a boy believed to be his grandson. The hideaway, roughly six-and-a-half hours from Moscow by plane or at least 54 hours by road, is said to be sitting on top of a massive, secret underground complex that could function as a nuclear bunker. Reports suggest that a high-tech bunker has been constructed at the complex for Putin and his secret family in the event of a nuclear war. Observers have noted multiple ventilation points in the grounds surrounding the mountain hideout, and a high-voltage line connected to an ultra-modern 110-kilovolt substation, capable of powering a small city. During construction, it was alleged that Putin contracted a firm of German engineers known for their expertise in digging large tunnels. Reports indicate that the massive complex is home to a large farm for breeding a subspecies of deer, the Caspian red deer, whose antlers are prized in alternative medicine for their use in making traditional health remedies. Unconfirmed reports even suggest that Putin once arranged to bathe in blood extracted from 70 kilos (150 pounds) worth of stag antlers to boost his male vitality.
