With Pride Month just a few weeks away, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have issued a critical alert warning about foreign terrorist organizations possibly targeting LGBTQ+ events and venues during the month. Pride Month, which celebrates and commemorates the LGBTQ+ community in the United States, is held in June every year. Nevertheless, while Pride Month is all about celebration, it comes at a period of intensified fear of anti-LGBTQ+ hate and extremist incidents. Both departments declared on May 10 that foreign terrorist organizations or supporters, like ISIS, may try to exploit forthcoming LGBTQ+ pride events to "commit or inspire violence." The announcement mentioned that the probable threats in this year's Pride Month are "compounded" by the "current heightened threat environment" in the U.S. and other Western nations. The FBI and DHS both claim there are numerous indicators that terrorist organizations have have planned an attack. Among them include violent threats made online, in person, or through the mail, in addition to someone taking photos of security-linked equipment or personnel and asking for information on events or crowd sizes without an acceptable explanation. They may also surveil gatherings or events, and try to enter a restricted area, avoid security or imitate law enforcement officers. The advisory also warns people attending the Pride events to be conscious of their surroundings all the time and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

Organizers of Pride events in major cities on the lookout for possible terror incidents

Although the alert did not particularly mention New York City, which hosts one of the world's biggest pride events, organizers of NYC Pride told local news outlets that safety for all gatherings is foremost. The New York Police Department (NYPD) also released a statement concerning its preparation to bring security for Pride Month events this summer. "The New York Police Department provides a significant and complex counterterrorism overlay to the events and celebrations around Pride month each June in New York City," the NYPD said in its statement. "The department's Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureau also closely monitors all relevant streams of intelligence, in real-time, as they relate to foreign terrorist groups or domestic violent extremists." The NYPD added that it remains ready and vigilant in protecting New Yorkers and the enormous set of events around Pride month each year. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for San Francisco Pride said in a statement that the group takes all likely threats "seriously" and is cooperating closely with law enforcement. "As in previous years, we will monitor any potential risks and plan accordingly to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for everyone who joins us to celebrate Pride," the spokesperson stated.
