Donald Trump may be forced to miss his son Barron's high school graduation due to New York trial
Former President Donald Trump may be forced to miss his son Barron's graduation, with New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan saying
he has yet to determine whether he could approve the request for a recess on the day.
Trump's criminal trial in New York
began on Monday, April 15, with Merchan as the presiding judge.
At the beginning of the trial, before Merchan invited potential jurors into the courtroom to begin the jury selection process, he hashed out some final affairs with the defense and the prosecution. This discussion involved, among other subjects, Trump's gag orders and going over the prosecution's evidence that will not be admissible in court.
Merchan also told them that there is no basis to recuse himself from the case, as Trump previously requested following evidence that came to light regarding Merchan's daughter Loren and her ties to Vice President Kamala Harris. (Related:

One final piece of business involved Trump's counsel asking Merchan to adjourn the court on specific dates so that the former president could attend other events, including a request for a recess on May 17 so that Trump could go to Florida to attend Barron's graduation ceremony.
Merchan immediately declined to adjourn the Supreme Court's hearing on that date, claiming that Trump's priority should be attending the trial rather than going to his son's graduation ceremony.
However, Merchan did not make a final answer to the question of Barron's graduation, saying that he doesn't necessarily have an issue with the nature of the request but rather needs to see how the trial unfolds before making the decision.
"Regarding counsel's request that the court adjourn on Friday, May 17th, for Mr. Trump to attend his son's high school graduation … I cannot rule on those two requests at this time," Merchan said, also refusing to rule on a recess on June 3 for a member of Trump's defense team to attend their son's graduation as well.
"It really depends on how we are doing on time and where we are in the trial," Merchan continued. "If everything is going according to schedule without unnecessary delays, then I am sure we will be able to adjourn for one or both of those days, but if we are running behind schedule, we will not be able to."
Trump, allies bash Merchan's heartlessness
In a statement following the first day of the trial, Trump called out the crookedness of the trial for not even letting him attend his son's high school graduation.
"My son is graduating from high school and it looks like the judge will not let me go to the graduation of my son who's worked very, very hard," lamented Trump. "He's a great student. And he's very proud of the fact that he did so well, and was looking forward to – for years – have his graduation with his mother and father there."
"Looks like the judge isn't going to allow me to escape this scam," he added. "
This is a scam trial."
Barron, who turned 18 on March 20, has been attending a private school in Florida and is reportedly considering his post-graduation options with the help of his mother, former First Lady Melania.
The former president also took his anger out on Merchan on Truth Social, stating: "Who will explain for me, to my wonderful son, Barron, who is a great student at a fantastic school, that his dad will likely not be allowed to attend his graduation ceremony, something that we have been talking about for years, because a seriously conflicted and corrupt New York state judge wants me in criminal court on a bogus 'Biden Case.'"
"
Judge Merchan is truly heartless in not letting a father attend his son's graduation," commented Eric Trump in a post on X.
Even other Trump allies have expressed their disgust, with Sen Mike Lee (R-UT) saying that "telling Trump he can't attend Barron's graduation goes beyond mere jackassery. This is deliberately cruel."
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) even accused Merchan of
acting on "pure spite" for not letting the former president attend his son's graduation, and Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake said she was "heartbroken."
"All the hard work our kids put into graduating, and
President Trump is being robbed of getting to experience his son's high school graduation ceremony. This corrupt judge is heartless and cruel. We the people will send a message in November and take our country back."
