Republican members of the House of Representatives are urging Google's parent company Alphabet to reveal any potential government influences that may have impacted the development of its biased artificial intelligence chatbot called Gemini. Gemini, formerly known as Google Bard, is a large language model system that generates responses based on context, language and training data. Google claimed Gemini 1.5 had improved performance, but soon after its release in early February, people criticized it for wrongly inserting images of diverse individuals into historical prompts. Some users noticed that Gemini refused to provide images of White people in response to certain requests while readily offering images of people from other racial backgrounds. This included generating images of non-White senators in the 1800s and racially diverse Nazi soldiers. The Gemini team allegedly adhered to directives stating that AI should prioritize "equity," promoting historically marginalized groups over others, regardless of merit or accuracy. (Related: Google FAKES Gemini AI video to pump up its stock price.) In response, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) wrote a letter to Alphabet, requesting all connections or communications between Alphabet and federal authorities regarding Gemini. "In light of new reporting regarding how Alphabet intentionally biased its AI model, Gemini, by giving it instructions that distort the results shared with Americans who use the model as a source for information, we write to inform you that the Committee views the subpoena as covering material relating to this technology," wrote Jordan. "The subpoena requires Alphabet to produce, among other things, material concerning Alphabet’s engagement with the Executive Branch and Alphabet’s decisions and policies regarding content moderation," the letter continued. "The subpoena is continuing in nature, and the instructions and definitions accompanying the subpoena make clear that documents and information related to Gemini, an artificial intelligence chatbot technology, are within the scope of the subpoena." Jordan also mentioned in the letter the potential violation of the First Amendment. “Given that Alphabet has censored First Amendment-protected speech as a result of government agencies’ requests and demands in the past, the Committee is concerned about potential First Amendment violations that have occurred concerning Alphabet’s Gemini model,” the letter continued. The committee has set a deadline for Alphabet to submit all relevant communication records by March 17.

Cetin: "Woke" AI distorts reality and manipulates relevant information

Frank J. Fleming, a former computer engineer and children's television writer was among the first to notice the Gemini issue and shared screenshots on his X account. According to Fleming, Gemini consistently failed to produce images featuring White individuals, even when prompted with scenarios like medieval knights or traditional White-centric activities such as country line dancing or eating a sandwich with mayo. "This is just interesting to me now as a programmer," Fleming commented. "I just want to poke at it now until I can figure out what the algorithm is. Offhand, if it just tried to diversify any prompt (i.e., give his Latino Zulus), that seems easier than what it's doing. It needs to first figure out if a prompt would normally be primarily White people, and only then force it to diversify by some algorithm," Fleming posted. Another Gemini user encountered a peculiar response when attempting to force the AI to generate an image of a White pope. Instead of complying, Gemini provided a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) lecture, defending its stance by stating: "While it's not appropriate to assume all Popes are Caucasian, many have been from European descent." Imgesu Cetin, founder of Genie AI, a company specializing in data analysis, argues that this form of "woke" AI poses a serious threat by potentially distorting reality and manipulating information. "It says don’t write anything racist or sexist, but then you start affecting the truth. George Washington was not a black guy. So it’s really a big danger, manipulating reality." The controversy surrounding Gemini underscores the growing concerns about the ethical implications and potential biases embedded in artificial intelligence systems.
