Arkansas pro-lifers mobilize to defeat radical pro-abortion constitutional amendment

Pro-life activists in Arkansas are gearing up to counter a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would establish a "right" to abortion. Abortion is currently illegal in Arkansas for any reason except when the mother's life is in physical danger. But activists in the Natural State have successfully forced Attorney General Tim Griffin to certify the Arkansas Abortion Amendment of 2024 as a ballot measure to be voted on in November. The proposed amendment to be enshrined in the state constitution would prevent the state from banning abortion within the first 18 weeks of the pregnancy. Abortion procedures beyond these 18 weeks would be allowed for instances of rape, incest, fatal fetal anomalies and to protect the mother's life. The amendment would also exempt abortions performed to protect the mother from a physical disorder, physical illness or physical injury. The amendment, if passed, would nullify any state law conflicting with these provisions. This includes Amendment 68 to the current state constitution, which aims "to protect the life of every unborn child from conception until birth, to the extent permitted by the Federal Constitution." Pro-life activists led by Arkansas Right to Life (ARtL) have warned the public that the amendment could undermine existing laws protecting the unborn, parental rights and the health of pregnant mothers. "If adopted, the proposed measure could render all current laws protecting the unborn, protecting parental rights and protecting the pregnant mother null and void," explained ARtL. "This means that Arkansas laws requiring parental consent before a minor's abortion could disappear." "It could also repeal laws that protect the unborn from dismemberment abortion, it could repeal our informed consent and ultrasound law, clinic licensing law or admitting privilege law, and certainly, the law that protects the unborn child to birth," continued the group. "If this ballot measure is adopted, it could make it impossible and illegal to pass any common-sense protections for the unborn child or her mother in the future." Along with ARtL, other pro-life organizations have launched campaigns to defeat the amendment, including the Family Council of Arkansas, Arkansans for Common Sense and NWA Coalition for Life. ARtL has also launched the "Decline to Sign" campaign, urging Arkansans to withhold their signatures from a "death warrant on innocent unborn children."

Pro-lifer calls for a simplified abortion strategy to win abortion referendums

The abortion lobby has been consistently successful in winning ballot measures enshrining abortion rights into state constitutions. This, in turn, makes it difficult for future state laws to change them. (Related: Abortions in the U.S. HAVE INCREASED since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.) These amendments can only be overturned by a nationwide abortion ban, leading pro-life advocates to discuss the importance of coming up with new ways to protect life during elections. In turn, Jonathon Van Maren of "The Van Maren Show" proposed a simplified messaging strategy for pro-life movements. He suggests incorporating abortion victim photography to emphasize the human aspect of the issue. He encourages the use of statements from abortionists and pro-abortion activists themselves to reveal the harsh reality of abortion. "The reality is that a decent percentage of the pro-life movement runs away from these tactics. They're afraid of being open about what abortion is because they're confusing marketing with social reform. A social reform strategy which seeks to change people's minds is turning people off of an injustice," he said. He criticizes certain strategies, such as making arguments about "parental rights" and asserting that pro-abortion legislation is "too confusing" or "too extreme." He urges the movement to be more transparent and assertive in their messaging to save babies. "Everybody knows that we're being disingenuous [with these strategies] because the reality is the only reason any of us are in the movement; the only reason any of us do pro-life work, is because we want to save babies, because abortion kills babies," Van Maren said.
