State lawmakers in New York have urged President Joe Biden
to declare a state of emergency as illegals continue to flood New York City (NYC).
The 54 lawmakers from both houses of the New York State Legislature issued the call in a July 26 letter. They exhorted the chief executive to make the declaration so illegals can legally work in the country at the cost of taking away jobs from citizens. Democrat Jenifer Rajkumar, a member of the New York State Assembly, was the letter's foremost sponsor.
"We are elected officials from NYC requesting your help," the letter stated. "Our city is experiencing an unprecedented migrant influx, with a
surge of asylum-seekers arriving here in numbers never seen before in history. Our city is at a breaking point."
The state lawmakers urged the White House to expedite the issuance of employment authorization documents, dubbing it "a common sense and bipartisan fix."
"Asylum-seekers are arriving eager to work, and [the U.S.] has 10 million job openings with 3.5 million fewer people in the workforce than projected pre-pandemic," they argued. "Letting [the] recent arrivals work will allow them to support themselves, and would boost [the] economy by fulfilling the labor demand."
The lawmakers also requested additional funding from the federal government. According to them, the Big Apple only received $104.6 million in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency – just enough for 13 days of relief.
"We take pride in [NYC] being a beacon of hope for immigrants, but the influx of migrants is so great that the city is running out of resources. NYC is being forced to reduce services for its people."
Rajkumar and the 53 other signatories reiterated that they "stand ready to help and to support [the] president in taking leadership over one of the greatest crises NYC has ever faced." They added: "We believe that with your leadership, we can turn this crisis into opportunity and that this can become one of history's greatest success stories."
NYC mayor earlier declares citywide emergency
Since the spring of 2022, buses of illegal aliens sent from Texas have arrived regularly in the Big Apple. The migrants come from Central and South America, with many hailing from Venezuela as they seek to escape the socialist nation's economic collapse.
Nevertheless, elected officials from the Empire State welcomed these migrants despite the strain on city resources they could cause. NYC, which prides itself as a "sanctuary city," set about finding housing for the tens of thousands of border-crossers who arrived. Never mind that the Big Apple itself already has more than 60,000 homeless individuals.
This eventually led to NYC Mayor Eric Adams
declaring a state of emergency in the city in October 2022. During that time, his office warned that the illegal immigrant influx could cost the city a whopping $1 billion within a fiscal year.
"We have not asked for this," Adams lamented. "There was never any agreement to take on the job of supporting thousands of asylum-seekers. This responsibility was simply handed to us without warning as buses began showing up." (Related:

"We're going to do what we have to do, but we do need help to deal with this crisis that we're facing. We need help and we need it now. NYC is doing [its] part, and now others must step up and join us."
The city announced it would set up a shelter for 1,000 illegal immigrants at the parking lot of the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens. The state of emergency Adams declared made this new shelter possible. His office also announced plans to further bus illegals north of the Big Apple, but local officials in those areas quickly pushed back against the move.
