"It is important to note that nine of the reported 16 cases purchased ground beef at different ShopRites and the source of the remaining seven cases has not been determined. The CDC’s investigation is ongoing and the [U.S. Department of Agriculture] USDA has not recommended a recall," Wakenfern Food stated in an email.
"The purpose of the CDC announcement was to ensure that customers who may have purchased ground beef product in or around the April 27 to June 16 time frame and may still have product in their freezers are aware of the situation," said WakeFern Food spokesperson Karen O'Shea.

The CDC estimates that salmonella causes about 1.45 million human infections, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths annually in the United States. The most common source of the infections is from tainted food. Recently, a salmonella outbreak linked to the cookie dough of the Washington-based pizza company Papa Murphy's caused at least 18 illnesses in six states, with two hospitalizations.
