Chaos could erupt any moment in Russia as the leading opposition group to Vladimir Putin moved to pass the "Revolutionary Act." This seeks to dissolve the Russian Federation and remove all powers from Putin and government institutions. Andrey Sidelnikov, a member of the Executive Council of the Congress of People's Deputies (CPD), said the group met for a four-day session in Warsaw on the eve of the anniversary of Ukraine invasion. CPD is a group of politicians determined to overthrow the present dictatorial regime and build a democratic Russia. The group held its first session in November 2022, also in Poland. CPD currently has 76 former national and local deputies who gathered between them some five million votes in previous Russian elections that were still deemed competitive and free. Sidelnikov stressed that Putin is driving Russia toward civil war and its disintegration as a state, and the only way to remove him and his "criminal regime" was through the use of force. According to Express.co.uk, Sidelnikov has an extensive background in Russian politics, having initially acted as one of the leaders of Boris Berezovsky's Liberal Party, before going on to help found the Union of Right Forces in 1999. "I am not going to deceive anyone. A transfer of power in Russia cannot be achieved peacefully in any circumstances," Sidelnikov said. "And the reason for that is 23 years of Putin's policies. He has not only led Russia to war and made the country a threat to the whole world. He has brought the country to the brink of disintegration and civil war." He acknowledged that they may not yet have the ability to forcibly change the leadership, but he assured that preparations toward that end have already started. Fighters from the Freedom of Russia Legion will be instrumental in the overthrow of Putin and his dictatorship, Sidelnikov noted. The said battalion consists of volunteers who "see no possibility other than the use of violence to change the current Russian regime."

Putin's current approval rating higher than before Ukraine invasion

Despite the threat of civil unrest and critics wanting him to be dethroned and answer for the crimes he committed, Putin's approval rating remains high at 82 percent in January, according to a tracking survey by the independent Levada Center. Before the war in Ukraine, his approval rating in January 2022 stood at 69 percent. Scholars Eugene Rumer and Richard Sokolsky wrote that the reason for this is Russian strategic culture. "The sense of grievance against the 'European West' and, by association, the United States, is a prominent feature of the entrenched worldview broadly shared by Russia's national security establishment," they said. Globely News reported that these views were also adopted by a large segment of the general population, especially older Russians who lived through the Cold War. Putin's military offensives are seen by the citizens who consume state propaganda as defensive wars against the U.S.-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization. For 60 percent of Russians aged 55 and older, Russia's actions in Ukraine evoked national pride, according to the poll held last June. Ilya Ponomarev, a CPD delegate, contradicted the survey results, saying that the earlier mentioned approval rating is irrelevant as the polling is done in a "highly controlled society of scared people afraid of talking to sociologists." He added that the majority of Russians feel that they can't influence the situation. "That is why they are ready to say whatever they have been asked to say," Ponomarev said.
