If Biden were a Republican, the outcry over his failure to deal with monkeypox would be headline news

President Joe Biden and his administration's failure to properly tackle the monkeypox outbreak in the United States is barely making any headlines on mainstream media outlets. Guy Benson noted during an episode of the "Guy Benson Show" on Fox News that it would be a different story if a Republican administration were tackling this issue. "If this were a Republican administration screwing up this badly, over and over again, on a public health issue, it would be a much bigger story than it is, especially given the fact that it is overwhelmingly targeting gay and bisexual people," said Benson, who is himself a gay man. "You can almost imagine what the outcry would sound like and look like," he added. "You'd have activists, you'd have the media, you'd have Democrats [saying] 'This administration doesn't care about gay people, they don't care about our lives, they don't prioritize us, this is callous disregard, this is dereliction, this is bigotry, this is what modern bigotry looks like.'" (Related: New media rule: Don't say gay.) Benson noted that one of the ways Biden could have prevented this catastrophe from growing any further is by communicating "clearly and accurately" about how monkeypox spreads without worrying about "political considerations or political correctness," especially in terms of potentially offending the LGBT community. "I'm a member of that community, so I think I can talk about this a little bit," said Benson. "I understand that anyone can get it if you come in contact with a lesion, skin-to-skin contact."

Not discriminatory to tell the truth about who are mostly affected by monkeypox

In an opinion piece written for Townhall, Benson reiterated his point that it is not at all discriminatory or stigmatizing to point out that the vast majority of people in the United States who have contracted monkeypox are men who are gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men. "It's absolutely correct that monkeypox is not a 'gay disease,' in that anyone who comes in contact with monkeypox lesions can contract it," he said. "It is also absolutely correct that the vast, vast majority of Americans – and others abroad – suffering from monkeypox at the moment represent a very small subset of the overall population, within which it's being overwhelmingly transmitted through sexual contact." Benson noted that public health officials within the Biden administration should just focus on doing their jobs, which is to convey accurate medical information as clearly as possible to the American public. It shouldn't attempt to cater to political correctness or attempt to "chase public approval." "It's not 'stigmatizing' or 'scapegoating' to disseminate correct information, then craft public policy and set priorities accordingly," he said. Unfortunately, Benson added that in some LGBT circles, good medical advice could be received and treated almost like a hate crime. "It's not pointless 'sex shaming.' It's not homophobic to bluntly recommend that at-risk, sexually-active gay and bisexual men scale back their sexual exploits, or even abstain from them for a period of time," said Benson. "It's sound counsel, based on data and science." Learn more about Biden's recent failures at JoeBiden.news.
